Georgian Mahogany English Breakfast Table

Price: sale

F1779. Exuberant Classical Revival Breakfast Table, circa 1810-1820, crisply carved with vitality, having a beautifully figured mahogany rectangular top with curved corners, on a banded frieze having torus molding, and one deep drawer which has a fine, large step-cut glass knob mounted on a silver plate shank, probably English.

The support consists of an articulated ring - turned standard which flares into a luxuriously carved acanthus twined urn above a circular palmetto leaf carved base, resting on a square, crotch-figured platform. On opposite sides of the platform are rectangular acanthus carved panels with a slashed bud in the center. The molded swept legs, joined at the platform, are carved with acanthus leaf reserves, terminating in carved hairy animal paws, on original brass castors that have been rebuilt.

Probably from a shop where both apprentices and master craftsmen worked on separate parts. Attributed to the school of Joseph B. Barry, Philadelphia, 1759 or 1760-1838. Typical of Barry are the use of the torus molding, the limp haired paw feet, the carved panels on the platform base featuring a slashed bud surrounded by acanthus leaves Also, the rather free form acanthus carved legs are similar in manner and detail to the acanthus carving on other works attributed to Barry such as the Sofa, Clock and Card Table depicted in The Magazine Antiques, "Joseph B. Barry, Philadelphia Cabinetmaker," by Donald L Fennimore and Robert T. Trump, May, 1989, pp. 1212-1213.   $3995.00
